He also serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine. His research focuses on understanding age-related retinal diseases, particularly the mechanisms of inflammation and metabolic influences on ocular vasculature. Sapieha leads projects on therapeutic strategies for conditions like diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Education: PhD from Université de Montréal (2006), followed by postdoctoral training at McGill University and Harvard Medical School. His academic roles include Director of SemaThera Inc. and Scientific Director at UNITY Biotechnology. Research Interests: Sapieha's lab explores beneficial vs. destructive inflammation in neurovascular systems, metabolic reprogramming of immunity, and therapeutic development for retinal diseases. Key areas include the role of cellular senescence, obesity, and infection history in disease progression. Grants & Projects: Leads multiple funded initiatives, including the Canada Research Chair (2022–2028), studies on obesity and AMD (BrightFocus Foundation), and immune training mechanisms in retinopathies (CIHR grants). He has secured over CAD 15 million in research funding. Awards: Honors include the 2024 Effervescence Star Award, Cogan Award (2019), and election to the Royal Society of Canada (2018). He has authored >50 peer-reviewed articles in top journals like Nature Medicine and Science . Collaborations: Directs the CRHMR research center and collaborates with institutions like Unity Biotechnology and Harvard Medical School. His lab is affiliated with the Réseau de Recherche en Santé de la Vision (RRSV).
