Dr Christopher Stone is a Reader in Translation and Interpreting at the University of Wolverhampton, within the Faculty of Arts, Business, and Social Sciences and the Department of Social Science, Inclusion and Public Protection. He is an active researcher, educator, and supervisor with a focus on sign language interpreting, Deaf studies, and translation theory. PhD, University of Bristol (2006) PGCert in Higher Education and Professional Practice, University of Wolverhampton (2018) His research centers on Deaf interpreters, interpreter aptitude, media and legal interpreting, and the cognitive and systemic factors influencing sign language translation. He leads and co-leads major international projects such as SmartSafeSigning (AHRC) and DA-DMIT (ESRC/SSHRC/ANR/DFG), exploring deaf inclusion in domestic violence response and the role of Deaf mediators. His work applies institutional ethnography and cognitive linguistics to understand interpreter practices across healthcare, legal, and broadcast settings. The 15 most recent publications reflect a strong trend in interdisciplinary research, combining translation studies, linguistics, deaf studies, and social justice. Themes include interpreter aptitude, team interpreting, media interpreting (especially weather forecasts and news), diversity in the profession, and the development of specialized discourse in legal and medical contexts. His work increasingly emphasizes Deaf-led practices and systemic barriers to inclusion. Scientific Awards: International Francqui Professorial Chair (2024) Dr Stone supervises seven PhD students across the UK and Belgium, with topics ranging from intersectionality in interpreting to co-interpreting strategies and Deaf legal discourse. He has secured significant grant funding from the AHRC, ESRC, British Academy, and Spencer Foundation. His professional service includes editorial roles (e.g., Language Sciences, Interpreter Education Series), grant reviewing, and leadership as former President of the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters (WASLI). He is also an external examiner at Queen Margaret University. He leads the MA Interpreting program and teaches across BA and MA modules, including legal and conference interpreting. He is a member of the ICRD research group and contributes to national census efforts on sign language interpreters in the UK.
