Dr. Carly Anderson is a Sir Henry Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellow and Principal Investigator at University College London's Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience (ICN), hosted by Professor Mairéad MacSweeney in the Visual Communication Group. She is also affiliated with the Deafness Cognition and Language Research Centre (DCAL), an Associate Member of the Visual Communication Priority Program in Germany, and a visiting researcher at Professor Jason Barton's Human Vision and Eye Movement Lab at the University of British Columbia.
Her educational background includes:
- PhD from The University of Nottingham, UK
- BSc in Psychology from University of Surrey, UK (2007-2012)
Dr. Anderson's research examines experience-dependent plasticity in multisensory human communication, particularly focusing on how visual information from faces combines with auditory information from voices to support language and emotion perception. With personal connections to the Deaf community as a hearing child of congenitally deaf grandparents and daughter of a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter (holding Level 3 BSL proficiency), she conducts research through a diverse and inclusive lens. Her work specifically investigates how the unique sensory and language experiences of profoundly deaf and bilingual individuals shape communication processes.
Her publication record demonstrates consistent focus on cross-modal plasticity, particularly in deaf populations using cochlear implants. She has pioneered the application of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and EEG in this population, developing methods compatible with hearing devices. Her research shows how brain reorganization following deafness and cochlear implantation affects speech and emotion perception, with implications for audiological and language approaches used with deaf individuals.
Her scientific recognitions include:
- The Kimel Family Fellow Award (2019-2021)
- Outstanding Staff Contribution Award (2018)
- Access to Understanding Science International Writing Competition (2015)
Dr. Anderson actively supervises research projects across multiple programs including MSc/MRes in Cognitive Neuroscience, MSc Language Sciences, and BSc/MSci Psychology. She teaches courses on 'The Multimodal Brain' and 'Perception Psychology' while serving as a Research Project Supervisor and Personal Tutor. Her work extends to public engagement through projects like 'Tonotopia: Listening through Cochlear Implants' at the Victoria and Albert Museum and media appearances including Sky & Insight TV's 'Secrets of the Brain' and BBC News.
