Jon Skranes is a Professor and Head of the Child Habilitation Centre at the Department of Pediatrics, Sørlandet Hospital Arendal, Norway. He also serves as a Senior Paediatrician in the Regional Competence Center for children exposed to prenatal alcohol/drug exposure. His research focuses on neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants, cognitive development in children born very-low-birth-weight (VLBW), and the application of neuroimaging techniques to study brain structure and function. Key interests include working memory training interventions, white matter tract development, and the long-term effects of premature birth on neurological and cognitive health. Skranes has led studies evaluating the efficacy of computerized working memory training in pediatric and elderly populations, and his work frequently integrates MRI and DTI data to explore structural brain changes. He collaborates widely on projects investigating genetic influences on cerebral palsy severity and the neurobiological mechanisms underlying visual-motor deficits in preterm survivors. His contributions also extend to public health initiatives, including developing evidence-based online resources for parental education. His research portfolio includes over 30 peer-reviewed articles between 2011-2016, with a strong emphasis on translational studies bridging clinical paediatrics and neuroscience. Notable themes include cortical thickness trajectories, hippocampal volume correlations with memory function, and the neurodevelopmental origins of lifelong cognitive changes.
