Gerhard Friehs is a Professor at the Department of Medicine within the School of Medicine at European University Cyprus. He holds prominent roles including Director at IMASA (International Medical and Surgical Associates) in Cyprus and previously served as Chairman of the Neuroscience Institute at Baylor Scott & White Hospital, Texas. His academic qualifications include specialized residencies and fellowships in Neurosurgery, notably at the University of Minnesota and the University of Alabama. His research focuses on neurosurgical interventions, including Gamma Knife radiosurgery, Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for psychiatric disorders, and Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) for neurorehabilitation. He has contributed to groundbreaking studies on vagus nerve stimulation for depression and neural decoding for paralyzed patients. His work bridges clinical practice and advanced technologies, emphasizing neuroprosthetics and neural signal processing. Notable awards include the Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award (2007), Rhode Island Top Doctor (2005), and multiple recognitions from the Austrian Medical Association for his pioneering Parkinsonism research. Friehs has led and co-investigated major projects, including the Braingate implantation initiative and studies on intrathecal ziconotide for chronic pain. His academic contributions extend to editorial and advisory roles, with a focus on advancing neurological treatments and translational neuroscience. Current efforts include developing tissue banks for neuroscience research and enhancing BCI applications for locked-in syndrome patients.
