Dr. Ujwalkumar D. Patil is an Associate Professor of Civil (Geotechnical) Engineering at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), where he has served since 2023. Previously, he held roles at the University of Guam (2017–2023) and completed postdoctoral research at the University of Texas at Arlington. His expertise spans geotechnical engineering, unsaturated soil mechanics, slope stability analysis, and biogeotechnics. He integrates experimental and computational methods to develop sustainable solutions for infrastructure resilience in the face of climate change. Dr. Patil's education includes a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington, an M.Sc. from San Diego State University, and a B.Sc. from North Maharashtra University. He teaches courses such as Foundation Design, Geotechnical Engineering, and Risk and Resiliency Analysis. His research focuses on enhancing slope stability through biogeotechnical approaches, including the use of vetiver grass and Acacia tree roots, as well as computational modeling of soil behavior under varying conditions. His work has been supported by NSF-funded projects and grants from U.S. agencies like the Geological Survey and Department of the Interior. Key research themes include unsaturated soil mechanics, landslide mitigation, and climate adaptation strategies for critical infrastructure. Dr. Patil is active in professional leadership, serving on ASCE's Geotechnical Institute committees for Unsaturated Soils and Soil Properties & Modeling since 2018. His publications and presentations address topics like soil bioengineering, UAV-based slope monitoring, and predictive modeling of rainfall-induced failures in tropical regions.
