Everett Shock is a Professor at Arizona State University (ASU) with joint appointments in the School of Earth and Space Exploration and the School of Molecular Sciences. He directs the W. M. Keck Foundation Laboratory for Environmental Biogeochemistry and holds additional roles as Associate Faculty in the Biodesign Center for Fundamental & Applied Microbiomics and the Water Institute, as well as Senior Global Futures Scientist. His research focuses on environmental chemistry, geochemistry, and biogeochemistry, with emphasis on hydrothermal ecosystems, serpentinization processes, and planetary habitability. Shock earned a B.S. in Earth Sciences from UC Santa Cruz (1978) and a Ph.D. in Geology from UC Berkeley (1982), working with Harold Helgeson. He is a Fellow of the Geochemical Society, European Association for Geochemistry, and American Geophysical Union. His work integrates thermodynamic modeling with field studies in extreme environments like Oman’s Samail Ophiolite and Yellowstone National Park, addressing questions about life’s origins and astrobiology. Recent research highlights include modeling Europa’s ocean composition for NASA’s Europa Clipper mission, studying organic compound biosignatures on ocean worlds, and investigating microbial energy utilization in serpentinizing systems. Shock leads interdisciplinary teams exploring geochemical energy sources, subsurface geochemistry, and the interplay between microbial communities and their environments. His scientific awards reflect his contributions to geochemical theory and field applications. Current projects include analyzing hydrothermal systems’ temporal variability, advancing WORM (Water-Organic-Rock-Microbe) modeling tools, and preparing for extraterrestrial sample analysis through lab infrastructure development.
