Dr. Ali M. Hamed serves as Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Thomas J. Watson Sr. and Emma Watson Day Department Chair at Union College's Department of Mechanical Engineering. Based in Steinmetz Hall 218D, he leads both departmental administration and an active research program in experimental fluid mechanics. His academic background includes: B.S., B.A. from Washington and Lee University M.S., Ph.D. from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Dr. Hamed's research focuses on wall-bounded turbulence, environmental flows, renewable energy systems, and flow measurement techniques. His experimental work investigates turbulent boundary layers over complex surface topographies including 2D/3D roughness elements, canopy flows, and wavy walls. He has developed innovative flow control strategies using localized blowing and bio-inspired surface modifications. His laboratory utilizes advanced measurement techniques including particle image velocimetry (PIV) and volumetric particle tracking velocimetry in water channels and wind tunnels. His publication record shows consistent progression from fundamental turbulence studies toward practical applications in renewable energy. Recent work examines localized blowing for near-wake flow control, sheltering effects between roughness elements, and wind energy optimization through porous windbreaks and winglet designs. This research demonstrates increasing sophistication in experimental methods and application relevance. Dr. Hamed has secured significant research funding through: NSF ERI Grant NSF MRI Grant He actively mentors undergraduate researchers who co-author publications with him, demonstrating his commitment to integrating students into cutting-edge research.
