Anna Friberg is an Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer in History at Linköping University, affiliated with the Department of Culture and Society (IKOS) and the Department of History, Art History and Religious Studies (HKR). Her research spans linguistic and temporal aspects of modern politics, with a particular focus on environmental politics and movements. Her research interests include: Environmental Politics and Activism Temporal Aspects of Political Discourse Historical Futures in Climate Debates Apocalyptic Notions from Biblical Times to Present Sustainable Development Discourse Conceptual History of Political Terms Dr. Friberg's recent work examines the multitemporal horizons of environmental activism, exploring how narratives of ecological ends have shaped the global environmental movement from 1970-2025. She investigates how organizations like Greenpeace International and Friends of the Earth International engage with different temporalities, particularly contrasting the apocalyptic futures envisioned in 1970s environmentalism with the present-day (post)apocalyptic state emphasized by contemporary climate activists like Extinction Rebellion and Fridays For Future. Her research is supported by significant grants including: Swedish Research Council (2025-2028) for "The multitemporal horizons of environmental activism" Riksbankens jubileumsfond (2018-2022) for "Visions of the good future: Sustainable development and long-term political thinking in the Swedish climate debate, 1970-2015" Dr. Friberg is also involved with the LiU Hub for Apocalyptic and Post-Apocalyptic Imaginations, an interdisciplinary research group examining how apocalyptic traditions manifest in contemporary politics, media, art, and everyday life.
