Dr. Carl Luchies serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Kansas School of Engineering, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science at the KU Medical Center. He directs the Biodynamics Research Laboratory and the KU-Korea University of Technology Joint Master’s degree program, and previously held leadership roles including Interim Director of the Human Performance Laboratory (2004–2006) and Academic Director of the Bioengineering Graduate Program (2007–2010). His research centers on the biomechanics of human balance and motor control , investigating how aging and neurological disorders (particularly Parkinson's disease and diabetes) impact postural stability, gait, and movement. Using experimental studies, mathematical modeling, and computer simulations, his work integrates mechanical engineering with biological and medical sciences to understand musculoskeletal mechanics. Key focus areas include: Effects of age and neurological disorders on balance/gait Sensory reweighting mechanisms in postural control Motor control in dual-task paradigms Biomechanics of step responses to falls Neural control of movement Development of biomechanical interventions Dr. Luchies' publication trends (2018–2025) reveal dual research streams: biomechanics studies increasingly focus on diabetes-related balance deficits and innovative interventions (e.g., subthreshold vibration), while his education research emphasizes curriculum restructuring, peer mentoring, and remote learning strategies in engineering education.
