Dr. Patrizia Camelliti is a Senior Lecturer in Cardiovascular Molecular Science at the University of Surrey's School of Biosciences and Medicine, within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. She holds a DPhil from the University of Oxford and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). Her research focuses on cardiac fibroblast-cardiomyocyte interactions, using advanced models like living myocardial slices and tissue-engineered systems. Key projects include investigating fibrosis, arrhythmogenesis, and regenerative therapies. Camelliti's educational background includes a Biological Sciences degree (magna cum laude) from the University of Milan, followed by a DPhil at Oxford under Professors Peter Kohl and Colin Green. She has held a Junior Research Fellowship at Oxford and secured grants like the EP Abraham Cephalosporin award. Her work emphasizes 3Rs principles (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement) in preclinical models. Teaching responsibilities include leading modules like BMS1025: Cell Biology for ~400 students, alongside courses in physiology and animal biology. Current PhD students supervised include Georgie Thompson, Berjaeu Officer, Chris Duringer, and Millie Trowbridge. Notable publications (2023–2024) highlight advancements in myocardial slice viability, antifibrotic therapies, and bioelectronic strategies for cardiac engineering. Awards include the Junior Research Fellowship and grants supporting her work on cardiac slice models and fibroblast modulation. Her lab collaborates internationally, promoting adoption of 3D slice models in academia and industry to reduce animal use while advancing human heart disease research.
