annie ross

annie ross is a Maya-Indigenous Professor in the Department of Indigenous Studies at Simon Fraser University (SFU). Her work bridges scholarship, art, and activism, focusing on environmental justice, Indigenous rights, and cultural preservation. She holds a PhD in Native American Studies from UC Davis and an MA in Native American Art History from the University of Washington. Ross teaches courses on Indigenous bioregionalisms, environmental justice, and testimonio as a remedial tool for political oppression.

Her research integrates art and academia, with exhibitions including land love land defense (2022) and Rain Snow Mountain Hu(man) (2011, permanent installation). She has published widely in academic journals and literary magazines, including Canadian Literature and The Capilano Review. Her 2022 poetry collection some people fall in the lodge and then eat berries all winter explores Indigenous resilience through verse.

Ross is deeply involved in community projects, such as the Missing and Murdered Women’s Memorial Star Quilt Project and collaborations with Indigenous weavers and environmental groups. Her artistic practice emphasizes weaving, painting, and public art that engages with land rights and cultural continuity.
