Alexandra Pedersen

Alexandra Pedersen is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Geological Science and Geological Engineering at Queen's University, Faculty of Arts and Science, while also serving as a Manager for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Indigenization (EDII) Capacity Development at the McDonald Institute. She bridges her roles as an educator, activist scholar, and community organizer.

A human geographer with a critical social science lens, Pedersen's research focuses on Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities' resistance to imposed development, particularly in the context of extractive industries in Canada and Guatemala. Her work intersects environmental justice, postcolonial geography, and Indigenous rights, emphasizing the impact of resource extraction on marginalized communities.

Her publications, including articles in the Journal of Latin American Geography and contributions to the edited book Testimonio: Canadian Mining in the Aftermath of Genocides in Guatemala, highlight struggles against mining operations and the socio-ecological consequences of development. Her photography documenting the Q’eqchi’ Maya resistance to the Fenix nickel mine has been exhibited internationally.

Pedersen is Co-Chair of MiningWatch Canada and President of the Limestone Beekeepers’ Guild, integrating her environmental activism with community engagement and conservation efforts.
