Zoë Opacic is a Senior Lecturer and Reader in the History and Theory of Architecture at the School of Historical Studies, University of London. She holds a PhD from the Courtauld Institute of Art (2003) and has held positions including Visiting Fellow at the Max Weber Centre (2020–21), Leverhulme Research Fellow (2015–16), and Junior Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge.
Her research focuses on late medieval Central Europe, particularly the intersection of architecture, urbanism, and ritual. Key areas include the role of religious institutions in shaping cities like Prague and Vienna, and the impact of imperial patronage under rulers like Charles IV. She has curated exhibitions such as 'Diamond Vaults' (2005) and organized conferences on topics like medieval urbanity and ritual spaces.
Opacic has published extensively, including monographs like Diamond Vaults: Innovation and Geometry in Medieval Architecture (2005) and edited volumes like Architecture, Liturgy and Identity (2011). She serves as editor of the Journal of the British Archaeological Association and is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.
Her teaching spans undergraduate and graduate courses on Gothic architecture, medieval urbanism, and art history methodologies. She has supervised seven doctoral students, guiding research on topics ranging from Norwegian royal architecture to medieval English nunnery patronage.
