Zongwei Cai is an Endowed Chair Professor of Chemistry at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Environmental and Biological Analysis. He also serves as Director of the Dioxin Analysis Laboratory at HKBU and holds an adjunct "Changjiang Scholar" Chair Professor position in China.
His educational background includes:
- BSc degree from Xiamen University, China (1982)
- Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from Philipps-University of Marburg, Germany (1990)
Professor Cai's research focuses on Environmental Analytical Chemistry, where he is recognized as one of the pioneers in using mass spectrometry for trace analysis of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). His work has led to internationally influential innovations in developing new methods for identifying emerging POPs related to human health problems. This research has made significant contributions to environmental safety in China and other Asian countries. His expertise has positioned him as an internationally recognized authority in POPs research, leading to collaborations with experts from Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, and training for over 50 young scientists from Asia.
Professor Cai has received numerous prestigious awards and honors for his contributions to environmental science and analytical chemistry.

Professor Cai has published over 650 papers with 17,256 citations and an H-index of 68 (Web of Science). He has received 38 peer-reviewed research grants as Principal Investigator and maintains extensive international collaborations with scientists from Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, Belgium, Spain, and USA. He has served on international grant review panels including "The European Science Foundation," "National Science Center Poland," "UK Research and Innovation," and "Swiss National Science Foundation." Professor Cai was elected Chairman for the "Symposium on Developments and Challenges in Implementation of Stockholm Convention" in 2012 and co-chairman for the "International Symposium on Halogenated POPs (Dioxin2021)" in 2021.
He leads the State Key Laboratory of Environmental and Biological Analysis and the Dioxin Analysis Laboratory at HKBU, where his research teams focus on developing advanced analytical methods for environmental pollutants. His laboratories have become centers of excellence for POPs research in Asia, providing critical data for environmental policy decisions under the Stockholm Convention.
