Gerhard Lammel

Gerhard Lammel is a Full Professor at Masaryk University and Group Leader of the Multiphase Chemistry department at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz. His research focuses on the chemistry of organic trace substances, particularly pollutants in ambient aerosols, air-sea and air-soil mass exchanges, and environmental exposure to chemicals on large spatial scales.

His research interests encompass Atmospheric Chemistry, Environmental Pollution, Organic Trace Substances, Air-Sea Exchange, Air-Soil Exchange, Multicompartmental Chemistry, Environmental Exposure Assessment, Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), and Aerosol Chemistry. Lammel's work investigates the transport, transformation, and fate of pollutants in the environment, with particular emphasis on how these chemicals move between different environmental compartments.

Analysis of Lammel's recent publications (2023-2025) reveals a strong focus on pesticide distribution in European air, air-soil exchange processes for organic pollutants, oxidative potential of particulate matter, and the environmental fate of persistent organic pollutants. His work combines field measurements with modeling approaches to understand large-scale environmental processes, particularly examining how pollutants move between air, water, and soil compartments across different regions.

Lammel has guided 9 undergraduate, 10 graduate, and 16 doctoral students throughout his career. He has served on various academic committees including as Member of Faculty at the University of Mainz and the Max Planck Graduate Center. His community service includes Chair of the Board for the German Chemical Society's Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology Division, editor for Environ. Sci. Pollut. Res., and member of UNEP Stockholm Convention's Global Monitoring Plan.

Lammel leads the Multiphase Chemistry research group at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, which focuses on understanding the complex interactions between atmospheric aerosols and other environmental compartments. His team conducts both field measurements and modeling studies to investigate the transport and transformation of organic pollutants across different environmental media.
