Zoltán Tóth is a Senior Lecturer at the Hungarian University of Applied Arts (MOME), where he has taught design for over a decade. A 1998 MOME metalwork graduate, he's recognized for blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design across jewellery, coinage, and public sculpture.
His educational background includes:
- Master's degree in Metalwork from Hungarian University of Applied Arts (MOME), 1998
Tóth specializes in meticulous handcrafted jewellery using techniques like repoussage, chasing, and Japan's Shibayama zaiku (pearl shell carving). His work bridges Eastern and Western artistic traditions, drawing from Greek Antiquity through Renaissance to contemporary influences. He personally fabricates nearly all components, working with precious metals alongside unconventional materials like ivory, ostrich eggs, and exotic woods. The National Bank of Hungary regularly commissions him for circulation coins, while his sculptures adorn public spaces.
Tóth's artistic philosophy emphasizes 'asking the right questions' in design. His pieces reside in the Museum of Applied Arts, Ferenc Hopp Museum of Asian Art, and private collections globally. Recent exhibitions include 'Olga Biro' (Munich 2023), 'Secreto' (Valencia), and Homo Faber (Switzerland-Italy).
Notable recognitions:
- Noémi Ferenczy Award (2012)
- National Association of Hungarian Artists Award (2009)
- Lajos Kozma Applied Arts Scholarship (2003-2006)
As an educator, Tóth focuses on design process fundamentals while maintaining an active studio practice. His work exemplifies how traditional techniques can inform contemporary design solutions across multiple scales, from intimate jewellery to architectural installations.
