Zoe Yates is a Lecturer in the School of Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacy at the University of Newcastle. She holds a PhD from the University of Leeds and has expertise in nutritional biochemistry, molecular biology, and genetics of disease processes, particularly focusing on folate bioavailability, B-vitamin metabolism, and their roles in conditions like heart disease, cancer, and neural tube defects. Her research also addresses the implications of mandatory folic acid fortification and fetal programming of adult diseases.
Her career includes a Research Fellowship at the University of Newcastle (2007–2012) and postdoctoral roles at the University of Nottingham and University of Leeds. She has authored over 35 peer-reviewed publications in journals like Nature Reviews Genetics, Lancet, and Journal of the National Cancer Institute, and secured grants including the Ramaciotti Foundation Establishment Grant and University of Newcastle Strategic Pilot Grant.
Teaching expertise includes research methods and ethics, while administrative roles involve laboratory management and health & safety. Collaborations focus on nutrigenomics, vitamin D-folate interactions, and epigenetic mechanisms. Awards include invitations to speak at the Asia Pacific Nutrigenomics Conference and Nutrition Society Australia events.
Key research themes: Folate metabolism's role in health/disease, vitamin D-folate interactions, genetic polymorphisms' impacts, and mandatory fortification's dual effects. Active in professional bodies like the Nutrition Society of Australia and University of Newcastle's Institutional Biosafety Committee.
