Zoe Nikolaidou is an Associate Professor in Swedish at Södertörn University, affiliated with the Faculty of Culture and Education. Her research focuses on multilingualism, migration, and sociolinguistics, with an emphasis on literacy practices in institutional contexts such as healthcare, workplaces, and asylum processes. She holds a Ph.D. from Lancaster University, UK, where her thesis explored literacy in vocational education.
Her research projects include studies on asylum narratives in Sweden’s asylum process, funded by the Foundation for Baltic and East European Studies; health literacy and knowledge construction among parents of children with congenital heart defects, supported by the Swedish Research Council; and workplace literacy practices among Swedish and non-Swedish-speaking workers, funded by Forte. She has collaborated with researchers from Stockholm University and Uppsala University, among others.
Zoe’s work bridges linguistic ethnography and discourse analysis, addressing how individuals navigate complex communication systems in institutional settings. Her findings highlight the interplay between language, power dynamics, and identity construction in contexts ranging from elder care documentation to digital health information-seeking behaviors.
Her publications span topics such as asylum interview discourse, workplace documentation practices, and the role of blogging in health advocacy. She has also contributed to methodological discussions on negotiating access in ethnographic research on sensitive topics like migration and healthcare.
