Maria Eklund Heinonen is an Associate Professor and Lecturer at Södertörn University, affiliated with the Department of Culture and Learning. She primarily teaches Swedish as a second language within the teacher training program.
Research Interests: Her work centers on second language acquisition in adults, focusing on grammatical ability in oral proficiency assessments, literacy development, and educational contexts. She explores differences between spoken and written language, linguistic practices in professional settings, and mapping literacy in SFI (Swedish for Immigrants).
Projects: She co-leads the Forte-funded project "Working in your second language: linguistic practices in the workplace and design of professionally adapted language training" (ref. 2019-00712) with Stina Hållsten and Hedda Söderlundh. Another project, in collaboration with Eva Lindström (Mälardalen University), examines first-language literacy assessment in SFI. She also investigates teacher perceptions of second language students' texts with Lina Nyroos.
Grants: Currently involved in research funded by Forte (Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life and Welfare) for language training adaptation in professional contexts.
