Prof. Zlatko Janječić is a Full Professor in the Department of Animal Nutrition at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Zagreb, where he has served since 1994. He progressed through academic ranks from Assistant to Full Professor (achieved in 2019), specializing in poultry and rabbit breeding with emphasis on indigenous breeds and animal welfare in scientific contexts.
Academic background:
- PhD (1998-2002): University of Zagreb Faculty of Agriculture on 'Phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of Zagorje turkeys'
- MSc (1994-1998): University of Zagreb Faculty of Agriculture on 'Influence of increased calcium and rapeseed meal on chicken production parameters'
- MSc in Animal Science (1989-1994): University of Zagreb Faculty of Agriculture on 'Influence of different nursing and sows feeding on pig production'
His research integrates poultry breeding, indigenous breed conservation, rabbit production systems, and animal welfare standards. Current work focuses on sustainable feed formulations, housing system impacts on product quality, and preservation of local poultry genetic resources through EU-funded initiatives and national projects.
Recent publications (2017-2020) reveal consistent emphasis on alternative feed ingredients for broilers, comparative egg quality analysis across duck breeds and housing systems, and selenium supplementation effects on meat preservation. Key trends show integration of traditional farming practices with modern welfare standards in poultry and rabbit production.
Prof. Janječić teaches 15+ courses including Poultry Production, Rabbit Breeding, and Animal Welfare. He coordinates major projects such as 'Biodostupnost karotenoida kukuruza kod nesilica' (Croatian Science Foundation, 2020-2024) and 'Zaštita posavske kukmaste kokoši' (Zagreb County, 2019-2021), while participating in COST Action CA15224 on keel bone damage solutions.
Based in the Division for Animal Sciences, he collaborates with the Experimental Poultry Centre (Belgium), EU networks like TEFSI, and Croatian governmental bodies. His advisory roles include the Ministry of Agriculture's Egg Marketing Standards Commission and National Ethics Committee for Animal Research.
