Prof. Zille is a Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Vienna, within the Faculty of Life Sciences. Their research focuses on cerebrovascular pharmacology, particularly mechanisms underlying cerebrovascular diseases such as stroke and dementia. They lead the Cerebrovascular Pharmacology research group, which aims to identify novel therapeutic targets for prevention and treatment of cerebrovascular injuries.
Research interests include understanding the pathophysiology of cerebrovascular diseases, mechanisms of axonal degeneration, endothelial cell death after stroke, and the role of hypertension in vascular changes leading to neurodegeneration. The group also investigates bioactive compounds to promote healthy brain aging and develop innovative therapies for neuroprotection and recovery.
Notable funding includes grants from the Austrian Academy of Sciences (2024-2027), Hochschuljubiläumsfonds der Stadt Wien (2023), and the BMBF-funded projects (2018-2019) such as MERCEDES and NEPTUN. Their work integrates advanced models, deep learning for axonal analysis, and interdisciplinary approaches to address unmet clinical needs in cerebrovascular disorders.
The Cerebrovascular Pharmacology group is actively engaged in collaborative projects, including the HEADS Roundtable, to advance translational research and clinical applications targeting stroke and neurodegenerative diseases.
