Zhongming Lan is a Research Fellow in Soil Carbon Science at Griffith University’s School of Environment and Science, affiliated with the Australian Rivers Institute. He completed his PhD in Soil Science at Griffith University (2013–2017) and held a Research Laboratory Manager role (2019–2021) before transitioning to his current position. His research focuses on soil biogeochemistry, particularly biochar impacts on greenhouse gases, green manure effects on soil fertility, and phosphorus dynamics in terrestrial systems. He has authored over 20 peer-reviewed publications.
Research interests include
- Biogeochemical cycling of C/N/nutrients in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems,
- Organic waste utilization,
- Biochar’s role in emissions reduction,
- Soil carbon sequestration,
- Land rehabilitation, and
- Agroecological sustainability.
Grants & Projects: Key roles in projects like ACIAR-funded initiatives enhancing Philippine and Bangladeshi agricultural systems, CRC High Performance Soils grants evaluating organic fertilizers and microbial carriers, and biochar-derived biosolids market analysis. Total project funding exceeds $6M.
Awards: 2023 Griffith Science Health & Safety Excellence Award.
Teaching: Lab demonstrations for courses on Land Degradation & Catchment Management and Earth Systems, focusing on Total Carbon/Nitrogen analysis and Dissolved Organic Matter.
