Johannes Lehmann is a Professor of Soil Biogeochemistry and Soil Fertility Management at Cornell University and a Hans Fischer Senior Fellow at the Technical University of Munich’s Institute for Advanced Study (TUM-IAS). His academic career began with graduate studies in Soil Science at the University of Bayreuth, Germany. He has held prominent roles, including editor-in-chief of Nutrient Cycling in Agroecosystems, and has contributed to international initiatives like the UNCCD’s Sustainable Land Management workgroup.
Lehmann’s research focuses on soil organic matter dynamics, pyrogenic carbon biogeochemistry, and biochar’s role in sustainable agriculture. His work bridges fundamental science and practical applications, such as developing fertilizers from waste and soil carbon sequestration strategies. Key contributions include discoveries about soil organic matter stabilization mechanisms and the global relevance of biochar technology.
He has authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications, including seminal works on soil carbon persistence (e.g., Nature, 2011) and biochar’s environmental impacts. His awards include the SUNY Chancellor Award for Excellence (2010) and repeated recognition as a Thomson Reuters Highly Cited Researcher (2014–2016).
Lehmann’s interdisciplinary projects address climate change mitigation, food security, and pollution reduction. He collaborates globally, advising policymakers and contributing to initiatives like the International Soil Carbon Network. His work emphasizes synergies between scientific innovation and actionable solutions for sustainable land management.
