Zhiwei Li is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Maryland College Park, joining in August 2024. He holds a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of California Riverside (2014–2019), an M.Sc. in Materials Science from Soochow University (2011–2014), and a B.Sc. in Materials Science from Soochow University (2007–2011). Prior to his current role, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Northwestern University under Prof. Chad Mirkin (2022–2024) and a Research Assistant at UCR under Prof. Yadong Yin and Prof. Nosang V. Myung (2014–2022).
His research focuses on:
- Controlled synthesis of magnetic, metallic, and semiconductor nanomaterials
- Programmable assembly of smart nanostructured materials and quantum superlattices
- High-throughput synthesis and AI-driven discovery of nanocrystals for energy applications
Notable achievements include the IIN Outstanding Researcher Leader Award (2024), IAAM Scientist Medal (2023), and Richard P. Van Duyne Postdoctoral Fellowship (2022). The Li Research Group's work spans photonic metamaterials, quantum engineering, and energy storage, with emphasis on stimuli-responsive systems and nanocrystal megalibraries.
His lab integrates computational modeling, combinatorial synthesis (e.g., polymer pen lithography), and AI to accelerate materials discovery. Current projects include DNA-mediated assembly of quantum metamaterials and high-throughput screening of perovskite nanocrystals for photovoltaics.
