معرفی
Nosang V. Myung serves as the Bernard Keating-Crawford Endowed Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering within the University of Notre Dame's College of Engineering. He concurrently directs two critical university facilities: the Analytical Science and Engineering (ASEND) Core Facility and the Materials Characterization Facility, providing essential infrastructure for advanced materials research across campus.
Professor Myung's research program centers on nanoengineered materials synthesis through electrochemical and electrospinning techniques, targeting applications in gas sensing, environmental remediation, and energy harvesting. His lab specializes in controlling nanoscale features to enhance material properties beyond current limitations, with particular expertise in metal oxide semiconductors for chemiresistive sensors and hybrid nanofiber composites. Key application areas include spintronics, optoelectronics, and point-of-use water treatment systems where nanoscale precision enables breakthrough performance.
Analysis of recent publications (2024-2025) reveals dominant themes in gas sensor development using zinc oxide and tungsten oxide nanostructures functionalized with noble metals, alongside significant work on environmental remediation through nanofiber-based filtration membranes for heavy metal removal. Emerging trends include piezoelectric nanofibers for energy harvesting and biohybrid optical biosensors, demonstrating the lab's interdisciplinary approach bridging materials science, electrochemistry, and environmental engineering.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Election as Fellow of The Electrochemical Society
- Election as Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI)
Professor Myung leads the NSF-funded Engineering Research Center for next-generation refrigerant technology and collaborates with industry partners like Sambachain on the Localized Health Alert System. His research group actively mentors students in nanomaterials innovation while securing substantial external funding for translating fundamental discoveries into real-world solutions.
The Myung Lab operates from McCourtney Hall of Molecular Science and Engineering, focusing on intelligent sensor systems through electrochemistry and nanoscience. Current projects include reusable antimicrobial masks, advanced gas sensor arrays for environmental monitoring, and piezoelectric textiles for energy harvesting, reflecting a strong commitment to developing practical applications from fundamental nanomaterials research.
