Dr. Sheikh A. Akbar is a Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The Ohio State University. He founded the National Science Foundation (NSF) Center for Industrial Sensors and Measurements (CISM) and has made significant contributions to the synthesis-microstructure-property relations of ceramic materials for electrochemical devices and biomedical applications. His work spans advanced sensors, fuel cells, batteries, and nanomaterials.
Education:
- B.S. and M.S. in Solid State Physics
- Ph.D. in Materials Engineering
Dr. Akbar's research focuses on ceramic bulk materials, thin-films, and nano-heterostructures, with applications in gas sensing, energy storage, and biomedical engineering. His recent work explores nanostructured metal oxides for supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries, and environmental remediation.
His scientific awards include the 2023 Alumni Distinguished Teaching Award, 2018 Fellow of the Electrochemical Society, and multiple R&D 100 Awards. He has served on editorial boards for journals like Sensors and Actuators B: Chemical and co-edited two books on sensors.
