Zhijian "James" Chen is a distinguished Chinese-American biochemist and Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He holds the George L. MacGregor Distinguished Chair in Biomedical Science and serves as an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
Dr. Chen's educational journey began in China where he graduated from Anxi No. 1 High School in 1981. He earned his undergraduate degree in biology from Fujian Normal University in 1985, after which he received a scholarship to attend the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he completed his Ph.D. in biochemistry in 1991. Following his doctoral studies, he conducted post-doctoral research at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies.
Chen's research has revolutionized our understanding of cellular immune responses. His work primarily focuses on molecular mechanisms of innate immunity, particularly how cells detect foreign DNA and RNA. He is best known for discovering the cGAS enzyme and its role in triggering immune responses to cytosolic DNA, which has profound implications for understanding autoimmune diseases, viral infections, and cancer immunology. His laboratory has made seminal contributions to understanding ubiquitin signaling pathways and their role in NF-κB activation, as well as discovering the MAVS protein that mediates antiviral signaling.
Dr. Chen's scientific achievements have been recognized with numerous prestigious awards including the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences (2019), the Lasker Award (2024), and the Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstaedter Prize (2025). His research has been consistently funded by major organizations including the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, which supported his early work on NF-κB and immune responses to RNA viruses.

Although specific details about his advisees are not provided in the source material, Dr. Chen has undoubtedly mentored numerous graduate students and postdoctoral fellows through his laboratory at UT Southwestern. His research has been supported by substantial grant funding, including from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, enabling groundbreaking discoveries in immunology and cell signaling.
Dr. Chen leads an active research laboratory at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center focused on molecular mechanisms of innate immunity. His lab continues to investigate how cells detect nucleic acids and mount appropriate immune responses, with implications for developing new treatments for infectious diseases, autoimmune disorders, and cancer.
