Dr. Zhi Peng Benny TAN is an Assistant Professor (Practice) at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore (NUS). He holds interdisciplinary qualifications, including an MPhil in Criminological Research from the University of Cambridge (2019, Manuel López-Rey Graduate Prize recipient) and an LLB from NUS. His research focuses on criminal law (sentencing policy), criminal evidence, and procedure. He actively mentors pro bono legal projects and has been recognized repeatedly for teaching excellence, including multiple NUS awards (AY15/16–AY22/23) and the NUS Annual Teaching Excellence Award (2017/18).
Professional roles include Deputy Public Prosecutor, State Counsel at AGC, and independent counsel for Singapore’s High Court/Court of Appeal. He teaches Evidence and Criminal Law courses at NUS Law. His publications include Foundations of Criminal Law in Singapore (2022) and peer-reviewed articles cited by Singapore courts. He serves as a Professorial Fellow with AGC-Legal Service Academy and a Fellow with NUS Teaching Academy.
His contributions span legal practice, education, and scholarship, with a focus on advancing criminal justice frameworks and legal pedagogy.
