Professor Zhenyu J Zhang is a Professor of Soft Matter Engineering at the University of Birmingham's School of Chemical Engineering. He leads research consortia funded by EPSRC and Horizon Europe, focusing on antimicrobial technologies and sustainable formulated products. His expertise spans biotribology, surface forces, and biomaterials.
Education: PhD in Polymer Physics (University of Sheffield, 2008) and MSc (Distinction) in Polymer Science & Engineering (University of Birmingham & Aston University, 2004).
Research interests include soft matter at surfaces/interfaces, healthcare technologies, and multiscale tribology. He holds two Industrial Fellowships from the Royal Academy of Engineering (Procter & Gamble and DuPont Teijin Film).
He is part of the Healthcare Technologies Institute (HTI), collaborating across disciplines to accelerate healthcare innovations. His work bridges chemical engineering, biomedical science, and applied mathematics.
Key contributions include advancing antimicrobial surface coatings, nanomedicine, and sustainable materials. Recent publications focus on formulation science, biomaterials, and tribological mechanisms.
