His work centers on environmental epidemiology with a global health perspective, particularly in China and developing regions of Asia.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Exposure Assessment/Epidemiology, School of Public Health, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) and Rutgers University
- M.D., Tongji Medical University, China
Dr. Qian's research focuses on the health impacts of environmental exposures, especially air pollution. His primary interests include maternal and child health, global health disparities, exposure assessment methodologies, and the long-term effects of indoor and outdoor air pollutants on respiratory and chronic diseases. He has extensive experience conducting epidemiological studies in both the United States and China.
His most notable contribution was as a key investigator in the long-running U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-sponsored study titled "Health Effects of Long-term Air Pollution on Lung Function and Respiratory Health in Children and Adults in Four Chinese Cities," conducted under the China-U.S. Protocol for Scientific and Technical Cooperation from 1987 to 2001. Currently, he is leading efforts to build three large cohort studies in China to further investigate environmental health outcomes.
Dr. Qian is actively engaged in research collaborations that assess ambient air pollution levels in developing Asian countries and their association with adverse health outcomes. His work contributes significantly to understanding environmental risk factors in low- and middle-income settings.
Professional Service and Community Work:
- Key Investigator, "Health Effects of Long-term Air Pollution on Lung Function and Respiratory Health in Children and Adults in Four Chinese Cities" (U.S. EPA, 1987–2001)
- Currently evaluating ambient air pollution and health outcomes in China
- Building three large cohort studies in China
Dr. Qian’s expertise in environmental epidemiology bridges international research and public health policy, with a sustained commitment to improving population health globally.
