Zheng Chang is a Principal Researcher at the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden. He leads the Psychiatric and pharmaco-epidemiology research group, focusing on the effectiveness and safety of pharmacological treatments for psychiatric disorders using real-world data and advanced pharmacoepidemiology approaches.
- PhD in Epidemiology, Karolinska Institutet, 2013
- MSc in Biomedicine, Karolinska Institutet, 2009
- BSc in Life Science, Fudan University, 2007
Dr. Chang's research encompasses three main areas: 1) the effectiveness and safety of pharmacological treatment for psychiatric disorders, particularly psychotropic medications like antidepressants and ADHD medication; 2) the interplay between mental and physical illness, examining how mental disorders influence the management and prognosis of chronic somatic diseases; and 3) forensic psychiatry, investigating how psychiatric disorders and their treatment affect criminal behavior and recidivism. His work frequently utilizes large-scale population data from national health registers and medical claim databases across Sweden, China, and the US.
His extensive publication record demonstrates a strong focus on ADHD medication research, with numerous studies examining the risks and benefits of these treatments across various outcomes including depression, cardiovascular diseases, unintentional injuries, and mortality. His more recent work has expanded into examining associations between autism and dementia across generations, sex differences in psychiatric disorders, and the interplay between mental illness and chronic physical conditions like kidney disease.
- Rafaelsen Young Investigator Award from the International College of Neuropsychopharmacology, 2019
- COFAS Marie Curie International Postdoc Fellowship, 2014
Dr. Chang currently supervises several doctoral students including Tyra Lagerberg, Le Zhang, and Nanbo Zhu. His research has been supported by multiple funding sources including the Swedish Research Council (VR), Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life, and Welfare (Forte), Norwegian research counsel, Karolinska Institutet Research Foundation, and Thurings Stiftelse. His work often involves international collaborations across multiple institutions and countries.
As leader of the Psychiatric and pharmaco-epidemiology research group, Dr. Chang oversees a team of researchers investigating the complex relationships between mental health, physical health, and medication effects using sophisticated epidemiological methods and large population datasets.
