Zhendong Jin is a Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Experimental Therapeutics at the University of Iowa's College of Pharmacy. His research focuses on the chemistry and biology of bioactive natural products, particularly OSW-1 and superstolide A, where his group pioneered synthetic methodologies enabling large-scale production for biological studies. His work has advanced preclinical drug candidates with improved pharmacokinetic profiles, potential antibody-drug conjugates, and molecular probes for mechanism-of-action studies.
Education: PhD in Synthetic Organic Chemistry from Purdue University, followed by NIH postdoctoral fellowships at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA. His research programs emphasize interdisciplinary approaches combining organic synthesis, medicinal chemistry, and chemical biology to address unmet clinical needs in oncology and infectious diseases.
Research interests include innovative synthetic strategies, structure-activity relationship studies, and translational drug discovery. His team has developed cytotoxic payloads for targeted cancer therapies (ADCs, SMDCs) and explored SARS-CoV-2 interactions with host proteins. Over 20 years of research has trained numerous graduate students and postdocs now in academia and industry (e.g., Merck, Novartis, AstraZeneca).
