Zhen Xu is the Li Ka Shing Endowed Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on developing ultrasound-based therapies, notably inventing histotripsy—a non-invasive, non-ionizing, and non-thermal ablation technique using controlled cavitation. This innovation has been translated into clinical trials for treating malignant and benign tumors, leading to FDA approval for liver tumor therapy. Dr. Xu’s work spans basic science, device development, and preclinical studies to clinical application.
Her research areas include biomedical imaging, ultrasonics, image-guided therapy, cancer treatment, cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders, immunology, and skeletal orthopaedics. Histotripsy applications extend to thrombolysis, tumor ablation, and brain surgery. Dr. Xu collaborates on developing advanced systems like MRI-guided histotripsy and transcranial targeting technologies.
Her contributions include over 50 peer-reviewed articles since 2020, focusing on histotripsy mechanisms, clinical translation, and therapeutic strategies. Notable advancements include optimizing transcranial treatments, enhancing immune responses through ablation, and improving drug delivery via tumor vasculature alteration. The Histotripsy Group under her leadership drives interdisciplinary innovation in ultrasound therapy.
