Zaven Altounian is a Faculty Professor at McGill University's Department of Physics. His research focuses on metallic glasses, thin films, magnetic materials, and giant magnetocaloric effect (GMC) materials. He utilizes advanced techniques such as X-ray and neutron scattering to study material structures and properties.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Physics from McMaster University (1976)
Research Interests: Metallic glasses exhibit unique properties due to their amorphous structure, which Altounian investigates via short-range order analysis and electrical resistivity studies. His work on thin films and magnetic multilayers employs magnetron sputtering to create materials with giant magnetoresistance, with applications in sensor technology. Current projects include developing GMC materials for room-temperature magnetic refrigeration, focusing on R5M4 compounds and LaFe13-based systems.
Methods: Polarized neutron reflectometry, wide/small-angle X-ray scattering, and transport property measurements are central to his experimental approach.
