Dr. Zan Gao is a Professor and Department Head in the Department of Kinesiology, Recreation, and Sport Studies at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He holds a PhD from Louisiana State University and has held academic positions at the University of Minnesota, Texas Tech University, and the University of Utah. His research focuses on leveraging technology (e.g., wearables, VR, mobile apps) to promote physical activity and combat chronic diseases.

Research Interests: Dr. Gao’s work spans physical activity epidemiology, digital health interventions, and chronic disease prevention. He has pioneered studies on exergaming, active video games, and wearable technologies to enhance health outcomes in diverse populations, including cancer survivors, children, and older adults.
Grants & Awards: Dr. Gao has secured NIH grants, Roche Pharmaceuticals funding, and other major awards. His H-index of 57 places him among the world’s top 2% cited scientists. Notable awards include the SHAPE America E.B. Henderson Award (2024) and Fellowships from the National Academy of Kinesiology and American College of Sports Medicine.
