Zackary Berger, MD, PhD, is an Associate Professor at the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, with a joint appointment in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. His work focuses on the intersection of clinical ethics, shared decision-making, and patient-centered care. He is actively involved in primary care practice, medical education, and advocating for vulnerable populations through interdisciplinary research.
Education:
- BS, California Institute of Technology
- MD and PhD, New York University
Research Interests: Clinical ethics, shared decision-making, patient-physician communication, health policy, and the social determinants of health. His work emphasizes equity in healthcare access and the ethical challenges posed by systemic inequities.
Teaching & Clinical Roles:
- Preceptor for internal medicine residents and medical students at Johns Hopkins Hospital
- Faculty in the Osler Medical Residency Bioethics program
- Staff physician at the Esperanza Clinic, serving undocumented immigrants
Publications: Over 80 peer-reviewed articles and two lay books on doctor-patient communication and medical decision-making. Recent work addresses bioethical challenges in pandemics and health equity.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Ethics of Healthcare Decision Making course at the Berman Institute and co-founded Clinicians for Progressive Care.
