Zachary Zimmer

Zachary Zimmer is Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier I) in Global Aging and Community at Mount Saint Vincent University's Department of Family Studies and Gerontology. He earned his PhD in Sociology from University of Michigan with demography specialization. Zimmer's research examines global aging patterns, particularly how rapid socioeconomic changes impact older adults' well-being, with extensive work in East/Southeast Asia, Africa, and Eastern Europe.

His research portfolio focuses on demographic aspects of population aging, health disparities, and cross-cultural comparisons of aging experiences. Zimmer employs quantitative methodologies analyzing large-scale surveys and government datasets to investigate frailty, pain prevalence, disability transitions, and family support systems across diverse cultural contexts.

Zimmer maintains extensive international collaborations with universities, statistical agencies, and NGOs worldwide. His scholarly contributions appear across gerontology, sociology, demography, and epidemiology journals. Recent publications demonstrate methodological innovation in analyzing how early-life adversity influences late-life health outcomes across global contexts.

As Canada Research Chair, Zimmer leads capacity-building initiatives organizing seminars for academic and government audiences globally. He teaches courses in demography, aging studies, health policy, and research methods, bringing international perspectives to the curriculum.
