Zachary T. Ball is a Professor of Chemistry at Rice University, leading the Ball Research Group. His work focuses on the intersection of protein chemistry and transition-metal catalysis, with contributions to medicinal chemistry, bioimaging, and synthetic methodology. He earned his A.B. in Chemistry from Harvard University (1999) and Ph.D. from Stanford University (2004), followed by a Miller Fellowship at UC Berkeley (2004–2006). His research emphasizes selective chemical reactions in complex biological environments, particularly using secondary structure and local conformation for reactivity control. Current projects include designing transition-metal complexes for chemical biology and developing antibody-drug conjugates. Collaborations, such as with the Tour lab on plasma-based antibacterial materials, highlight interdisciplinary innovation.
Key research areas include
- Protein modification with transition metals
- Metallo-therapeutic agents
- Bioorthogonal chemistry
- Dynamic covalent systems
Recent publications (2021–2024) explore pyroglutamate-selective reactivity, boronic acid reagents, and STAT3 signaling in cancer. His work bridges organic synthesis and biological applications, with potential in drug delivery and diagnostic tools. While no specific awards are listed, his contributions to chemical biology are widely recognized through publications and collaborations.
