Associate Professor Graham Ball serves as Associate Director in the School of Chemistry at the University of New South Wales. His research centers on innovative applications of NMR spectroscopy to investigate inorganic and organometallic chemical systems, with particular emphasis on in situ photochemistry for generating and characterizing reactive intermediates. Ball's work leverages NMR's unique capabilities for molecular structure determination and dynamic analysis of reactive species.
Research interests span NMR spectroscopy methodology development, transition metal-alkane interactions, photochemical generation of reactive intermediates, and computational chemistry integration (DFT, ab initio, molecular mechanics). His group explores fundamental questions about how transition metals bind and activate hydrocarbons, with recent work focusing on alkane coordination complexes involving osmium, ruthenium, and manganese centers. Computational methods are increasingly incorporated to enhance experimental understanding and guide new research directions.
Recent publication trends reveal a strong focus on alkane binding phenomena, particularly methane and higher alkane coordination to transition metals, with multiple 2025 publications describing crystallization of cationic alkane complexes. His work bridges inorganic synthesis, physical characterization through advanced NMR techniques, and computational modeling to unravel complex reaction mechanisms in organometallic chemistry.
Ball maintains active research operations from Room 129 in the Dalton Building (F12) at UNSW's Kensington Campus, with primary contact through g.ball@unsw.edu.au. His laboratory, known as the Ball Group, specializes in pushing the boundaries of NMR applications in challenging chemical environments.
