He is pursuing a PhD on printing, bookselling, and library culture in 17th-century Switzerland, supervised by Andrew Pettegree and Arthur der Weduwen. Brookman holds a BA (First Class Honours) in History from McGill University and an MLitt in Book History from St Andrews (graduated with distinction). His research interests include official print in republican cultures, war/peace documentation via print, and diaspora book trade activities.
He contributes to the Universal Short Title Catalogue and co-convenes the St Andrews Early Modern Workshop. His research is supported by awards including the Canadian Centennial Scholarship Fund Bursary and the School of History MLitt Award.
Brookman has presented at conferences such as the 17th USTC Book History Conference (2025) and published on topics including Genevan publishing rivalries and Zurich's Bürgerbibliothek donations. His work bridges economic, cultural, and political dimensions of early modern print networks.
