Barnaby Guy Cullen is a Research Assistant and Researcher in the School of History at the University of St Andrews. He commenced his PhD in September 2023 under Prof. Andrew Pettegree and Dr. Arthur der Weduwen, focusing on 17th-century Baltic Sea region print media, including newspapers, state ordinances, and news pamphlets. His work emphasizes geopolitical impacts on transnational news reporting and challenges national historiographical approaches. Funded by the School of History, his research also explores Baltic-Nordic book trade dynamics and institutional roles in print production.
Education: BA in Modern History (2016-2020), MLitt in Book History (Distinction). Professional roles include work with the Universal Short Title Catalogue (USTC), co-organizing its 2023 conference on Early Modern Publishers, and teaching assistantships in early modern history modules.
Key research interests: Transnational print networks, early modern publishing strategies, and the interplay between print media and imperial geopolitics. His publications analyze Genevan publishing rivalries and Scandinavian/Baltic print development.
Activities include presentations at conferences (e.g., 2023 Baltic Sea media talks) and organizing academic events. Collaborative projects with USTC highlight his engagement with broader scholarly communities.
