Z. John Zhang serves as the Tsai Wan-Tsai Professor of Marketing at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and is the Founding Director of the Penn Wharton China Center. His research and teaching focus on pricing strategies, competitive dynamics, and channel management within marketing science.
His educational achievements include dual doctorates: a PhD in Economics from the University of Michigan and a PhD in History and Sociology of Science and Technology from the University of Pennsylvania. He also holds a BA in Engineering Automation from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China.
Professor Zhang's primary research areas encompass targeted pricing, competitive strategies, market entry, and channel and retail management. His work investigates the strategic implications of behavior-based pricing, customer value-based management, and dynamic promotions in competitive markets. He has demonstrated how firms can leverage pricing to retain customers and gain market share, while cautioning against potential pitfalls in targeted pricing approaches in digital environments.
His academic publications reveal a consistent focus on strategic interactions in marketing, particularly in pricing and channel structures. Key themes include the use of game theory to model competitive advertising and the analysis of platform versus reselling models in e-commerce. These contributions have appeared in top journals such as Marketing Science and Management Science.

He leads the Penn Wharton China Center, fostering academic and business ties between the United States and China, and has been instrumental in organizing the Penn Wharton China Summit.
