Yvonne Kwan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology & Interdisciplinary Social Sciences at San Jose State University’s College of Social Sciences. She directs the Ethnic Studies Collaborative and co-chaired the Asian Pacific Islander Desi/American Task Force, advocating for APID/A student support. Her work bridges Southeast Asian refugee experiences with broader sociological themes of power, inequality, and cultural identity.
Research Focus: Yvonne specializes in transgenerational trauma among Cambodian Americans, critical refugee studies, and the impact of colonialism, immigration, and racism on education and mental health. Her research connects to contemporary issues like post-pandemic inequalities and anti-immigrant sentiment.
Leadership & Publications: She has published in the Journal of Asian American Studies, New Directions for Higher Education, and Bilingual Research Journal. Her current book manuscript explores trauma transmission in Cambodian American communities, and she organized the 2020 Southeast Asian American Studies Conference.
