Yves TIBERGHIEN

Yves Tiberghien is a Professor of Political Science at the University of British Columbia (UBC), holding the Konwakai Chair in Japanese Research. He is Director Emeritus of the Institute of Asian Research (IAR) and Co-Director of the Center for Japanese Research (CJR). His affiliations include the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs (Faculty of Arts) and roles as Distinguished Fellow at the Asia-Pacific Foundation of Canada and Senior Fellow at the University of Alberta’s China Institute. He is a Chevalier de l’ordre national du mérite (2017) and has held prestigious fellowships including Harvard Academy Scholar (2006) and Fulbright Scholar (1996).
Education: PhD from Stanford University (2002). Research focuses on comparative political economy, global governance (economic/environmental), and East Asian political systems. Empirical expertise spans China, Japan, South Korea, and Europe. Key books include The East Asian Covid-19 Paradox (2021) and Entrepreneurial States: Reforming Corporate Governance (2007). He founded the Vision 20 initiative (2015), a global forum on economic/environmental governance, hosting six summits since 2016.
Grants: Major SSHRC grants for projects on global governance (2004, 2009), climate change politics, and China’s role in global institutions. Research partnerships include collaborations with Sciences Po Paris, Waseda University, and Peking University. Current projects address systemic risks, Canada’s global positioning, and China’s governance impact.
Awards: Recognitions include Harvard Academy Fellowship (2004–2006), East Asia Institute Fellowship (2010–2011), and SSHRC funding for five major research projects. His work bridges academia and policy, influencing global governance frameworks through publications in Global Environmental Politics, Pacific Affairs, and policy briefs for institutions like the Woodrow Wilson Center.
Labs/Teams: Active in the Global Summitry Project (Munk School) and the Global Public Policy Network (GPPN). Collaborations include joint workshops with Tokyo University and Fudan University. He co-authored studies on biodiversity governance with Prof. Xue Dayuan and Prof. Wang Yong.
