Yvan Rose is a Professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland, specializing in phonology and language acquisition. His research focuses on how humans organize sound systems, acquire phonology in first/second languages, and produce speech sounds. He received the Petro Canada Young Innovator Award (2006-2008) and leads the PhonBank project under CHILDES, developing the open-source Phon software for phonological data analysis.
Education: M.A. from Université Laval (Québec) and Ph.D. from McGill University (Montréal). Teaching interests include phonology, language acquisition, and experimental phonetics.
Research emphasizes empirical and multidisciplinary approaches, integrating linguistics, psychology, and computer science. Key contributions include:
- PhonBank: A cross-linguistic phonological development database
- Phon software for corpus analysis and treatment target selection
- Studies on speech rehabilitation in cochlear implant users
- Investigations into loanword phonology and bilingual acquisition
His work bridges theoretical phonology with practical applications in speech-language pathology and computational tools for linguistic research.
