Yuyan (April) Jiang is a Full-time Japanese Language Lecturer at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM). She holds a Master of Arts in Japanese with a dissertation focusing on 'Inner Speeches in Japanese Conversation.' Her research interests include Japanese sociolinguistics, East Asian language pedagogy, and second language acquisition, with additional experience studying Japanese internet slang and media-based language learning.
Education: She earned a B.A. in Japanese at San Jose State University (SJSU), minoring in Computer Science and obtaining a TESOL certificate. Prior to her U.S. studies, she completed high school in Sydney, Australia.
Professional Experience: During her undergraduate years, Jiang served as a volunteer teaching assistant for Tae Kwon Do and Japanese elementary courses. She also led the Chinese Student Association at SJSU as president from 2018–2019. Her career goal is to contribute to East Asian language education in the U.S. as a language instructor.
Research & Interests: She explores Japanese communication patterns, including business etiquette and sociolinguistic dynamics. Future plans include expanding studies into Japanese linguistics and other East Asian languages. Her work aims to enhance language-teaching methodologies through interdisciplinary insights.
Hobbies: Jiang actively engages in Japanese ACG (Anime, Comics, Games) culture, volunteers in translation work (subtitles and articles), and enjoys playing and composing music on the guitar.
