Yuya Hagiwara

Yuya Hagiwara is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine - General Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa. He serves as Program Director for the Hospice & Palliative Medicine Fellowship and is actively engaged in academic geriatric palliative care education.

• Education: MD from Yamanashi Medical University, Residency and Chief Residency at Michigan State University, Fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at University of Texas Health Science Center, and currently enrolled in the Master of Academic Medicine Program at Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California.

Research & Academic Focus: Dr. Hagiwara specializes in medical education research, particularly in end-of-life communication, goals of care discussions, and family meeting communication skills. He is exploring the integration of technology in medical education and fostering collaborations between Geriatrics, Palliative Care, and Family Medicine training programs in Japan.

Publication Trends: His recent work examines end-of-life outcomes in liver transplantation candidates, caregiver challenges in cancer pain management, and the impact of immune checkpoint inhibitors near end-of-life, with a focus on clinical decision-making and patient communication.
