Yuri Takahashi is a Lecturer and convener of the Burmese Program at the Australian National University (ANU) since 2016. She holds a PhD in Modern Burmese Intellectual History from the University of Sydney, alongside a Master of Philosophy and earlier qualifications in Burmese literature. Her career includes seven years as a Burmese specialist with the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including a posting in Yangon (1991–1994), followed by language teaching roles at Takushoku University (Japan) and the University of Sydney (Australia). She received the 2022 Commendation for Excellence in Education from ANU's College of Asia & the Pacific.
Her research focuses on Burmese nationalism through literary analysis, notably via the biography of author Shwe U Daung. Key interests include modernity’s acceptance in Burmese literature, folktales, and colonial-era intellectual movements. She has published extensively on Burmese literature, music, and cultural history, with works appearing in Australia, Japan, and Myanmar.
Recent publications (2022) explore Myanmar’s musical instruments and borderland cultural studies, while earlier works (2016) analyze humor in folktales and colonial-era literary thought. She led the 2018–2020 project 'Elevating the next generation of Myanmar studies scholars,' fostering academic development in the field.
