Yuri Gama

Yuri Gama is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Latin American History at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Previously, he served as an Instructor of History and Internship and Career Advisor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His academic credentials include a PhD in Latin American History from UMass Amherst, a Master of Liberal Studies from Rollins College, and a BA in Social Sciences from Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina in Brazil.

Dr. Gama's research focuses on the urban history of Northeast Brazil in the 20th century, examining modernization and urbanization efforts across Latin America with particular attention to state-led urban planning and affordable housing initiatives in Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Norte. His work connects local urban histories with broader regional, national, and transnational networks of politicians, technocrats, and urban experts throughout the Americas.

His teaching portfolio includes courses on Modern Latin America, History of Informal Cities, History of Brazil, and Urban Planning and Foreign Affairs in Latin America. He has also taught 'Global History of Soccer' and 'Career Development' courses, reflecting his diverse academic interests and commitment to student professional development.

Dr. Gama's publications demonstrate expertise in connecting local urban histories with broader transnational development frameworks, particularly examining Cold War-era housing and urban planning initiatives in Brazil.
